I have chosen Shilpa Gupta’s work the singing cloud (2008-2009). The singing cloud is an amazing piece where the artist has used 4000 audio micro-phones to form a mushroom cloud reminiscent of the terrorist bombing in Bombay (2008). The micro-phones emit layers of different sounds and voices of the Bombay bombings.

    7. Comment on why you find this work interesting, how does it relate to your own interests?

The singing cloud interests me not only because it is a sublime, but because of the themes it explores and what the piece represents. The singing cloud explores the boundaries between risk and survival, freedom and tolerance, and activist and terrorist. These themes relate to me in how I am interested in human rights and believe in standing up for what is right.
